Subject: Act Now to Save Hong Kong
Dear SenatorXXX(or Mr./Ms.XXXfor both Senator and Representative),
I am writing as a concerned US citizen urging the US Congress to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019 (the Act) on September 17th when Congress reconvenes.
Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong government, has recently announced that she is withdrawing the highly controversial extradition bill in a gesture of goodwill and dialogue. This is merely a political tactic to stop Congress from passing the Act. In fact, Carrie Lam has a long track record of betraying the Hong Kong people and the public reception is very clear in not accepting her rhetoric and lies. Furthermore, she had outright refused the remaining four demands, without which no genuine dialogue is possible.
To reiterate, Hong Kong’s five demands are as follows:
1) A complete withdrawal of the Extradition Bill
2) Independent investigation into police brutality
3) Retract the labeling of the protest as a riot
4) Drop charges against protestors
5) True universal suffrage
Hong Kong civilians are living in fear everyday given the escalating violence of the police in events that have happened around the city, with the United Nations recently condemning the police force for failing to follow international guidelines on using lethal weapons. Examples include their collusion with a triad gang to attack citizens, sexually assaulting female protestors in detention and storming a subway train to indiscriminately attack and injure passengers. The deterioration of the rule of law is also evident in the spread of white terror such as political persecution at Cathay Pacific based on social media posts, and the corruption of the legal system with the justice minister prosecuting citizens with unfounded riot charges based on unreliable evidence by the police.
I, as a US citizen stand united with the people of Hong Kong in their legitimate, call for the fundamental rights of democracy, freedom of speech and rule of law that have long been promised by the Basic Law and as guaranteed under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework. Therefore, I strongly urge the Congress to acknowledge Demand no. 5 above, calling for full universal suffrage in Hong Kong in line with point 3, Sec.3 of the Act. Not only is there a large presence of US citizens living in Hong Kong, but it is also in the best interests of the United States to ensure Hong Kong maintain its economic stability and high autonomy from China, and that human rights and free speech are well protected.
Thank you for standing with Hong Kong.
Yours Sincerely,
XXX, Resident ofXXX state/city.
